The Potters’ Studio presents a:
TWO-DAY WORKSHOP
with Michael Kline

February 9 - 10, 2019    10 – 4:30pm

Next-Level Surface: Using Brushwork and Inlay Techniques to Enhance Your Forms

In this two-day hands-on workshop we will focus on wheel-thrown pots and embellishment of the clay surface. Participants will be guided through fun exercises to familiarize themselves with mark-making and the structure of pattern using brushwork, stamping and incising. We will make brushes and clay stamps to be used to decorate the surfaces of our pots. Michael will discuss and demonstrate his strategies for pattern with brushwork, pigmented wax resist and inlay, and will help students find patterns that are meaningful and appropriate for their forms. This workshop is designed for students with a solid foundation in wheel-throwing.

Michael Kline graduated with a BFA in Ceramics in 1986. He taught at the Westside YMCA in New York (1986-1989) before attending a Michael Simon Workshop at Penland School of Crafts (NC) in 1989. Following the workshop, he became a full time studio potter, sharing a workspace with Mark Shapiro and Sam Taylor in Western MA (1988-1998). In 1998, he came back to Penland as a Resident Artist. Following his residency, he set up a studio in nearby Bakersville, NC where he continues to work today. He has taught numerous workshops across the country, and in 2000 was a presenter at the Utilitarian Clay Conference at Arrowmont School of Crafts (Gatlinburg, TN).
