The Potters’ Studio presents a:
TWO-DAY WORKSHOP
with Debra Fritts & Michelle Gregor

August 17–20, 2019     10am–4:30pm

Sculpting the Human Figure in Clay

This four-day, hands-on workshop will include live process demonstrations, improvisational exercises and hand-building and decorating techniques for sculpting the human figure in clay. We will explore various methods to sculpt the figure in an expressive way, working from memory and the imagination. A painterly approach to surface development incorporating texture, underglazes, dry clays, engobes and mark making will be addressed. All skill levels are welcome.

Debra Fritts is a studio artist working in Abiquiu, New Mexico. She has national recognition for her work in ceramic sculpture through invitational exhibitions, museum exhibitions and collections, gallery representation, private collections and publications. Her sculptures are hand-built and multiple fired with a painterly glazed surface. The sculptures are a continuous story of awareness and the celebration of daily living.

Michelle Gregor sculpts the abstracted human figure in clay. Gregor’s forms apply the free, intuitive impulses of Abstract Expressionism to figurative representation. Her pieces range in dimension from a few inches tall to architectural-scale bronzes, but are unified in their sense of calm, mass and balance, simultaneously suggesting motion and repose. Perhaps best known as a colorist, her painterly, multi-layered and multi-fired approach to surface endows her sculptures with a sense of depth and the passage of time. Gregor has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of California, Santa Cruz and a Master of Fine Arts degree from San Francisco State University. She is a tenured Professor of Art at San Jose City College.
