Instructor: Whitney Smith
Push your ceramic skills to the next level in this intermediate to advanced wheel throwing class with Whitney Smith.
With a long background in production pottery, Whitney will be sharing her techniques for efficient and focused throwing for consistent results, as well as the importance of design and function for successful pots. Learn how to capture your design ideas on paper and then execute them on the wheel, while refining your approach, building skills, and challenging yourself to throw bigger and taller pots! Students will also begin work on component making such as lids, spouts, and handles, and learning how to make matching sets and nesting bowls.
The class will continue to expand students’ understanding of different clay bodies and glazes, and will dive into the fun and diverse world of surface design.
Whitney Smith has been working in ceramics since her first clay-throwing class in 1994 at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz. While she went on to obtain a degree in Anthropology from the University of California in Santa Cruz, her intense interest and love of pottery led her to open her own studio in 2000 in the San Francisco Bay Area and pursue a career in ceramic art. She has worked full-time in pottery since then, selling her work to people around the world and showing across the United States. She loves sharing knowledge with other clay lovers, and has taught a variety of workshops covering everything from surface design to marketing.
NOTE: This is NOT a beginning wheel class.
